The Serre farm business today manages 18 hectares of terrain, most of which is vineyards, the rest are meadows and wooded areas.
The quality of the terrain is ideal for producing sparkling wines, where the average slope is 30%, and thus, the viniculture is more similar to that found in the mountains than that found in the hills.
Machinery cannot access this area, so the operations are all done by hand, and materials are still moved using back baskets; the yields are therefore often limited and hardly ever amount to 130 quintals per hectare, as foreseen by the Regulations for Origin control.
The terrain is a mix of clay and rock substrata.
The hot summer weather, when grapes ripen, is eased by the capricious breezes blowing from the north to south across an open amphitheatre down to the plains which reach the sea.
The vines farmed in the Serre vineyards are the traditional, autochthonous ones that make up the grape types of VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE D.O.C.G., such as VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE D.O.C.G., Verdisio, Bianchetta and Perera.
In the vineyards found on the more gentle slopes, traditional Colli di Conegliano Red DOC wines are farmed, such as Cabernet, Merlot and Marzemino.
To be continued
The farming techniques are the usual double arched cane and cappuccino for the VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE D.O.C.G. and Verdisio vineyards, while for the farming of red wines, we opted to keep the sylvoz and also introduced the guyot methods.
It is the features of the terrain, which interact with the weather conditions, along with the utmost care given by the Serre wine farmers, that enable the wine to express those terroir qualities, thus making one wine better than another.
